Indigenous Approaches and Multicultural Education in the Chilean Alto Biobío Community: Facilitating Marginalized Voices
Abstract
Alto Biobío is an indigenous community located in the Andean Mountains in Chile whose native language is Chedungun. This community is facing problems regarding learning their local language, Chedungun, and learning English as a foreign language. This studys purpose was twofold: (a) to cocreate a bilingual Chedungun/English module based on collaborative ethnography research and (b) to evaluate the effects of this module on childrens Chedungun language learning processes and English language learning. The results suggest that collaborative ethnography is essential for strengthening the Chedungun language revitalization processes. In addition, the results demonstrate that a Chedungun/English module contributes to developing multicultural education in the Chilean Alto Biobío community. © 2023 Common Ground Research Networks.
