Abstract

Compact and spiked MoS2 nanoribbons were synthesized by the CVD process using MoO3 nanoribbons as a template. The MoO3 nanoribbons obtained through the hydrothermal process showed a smooth surface. The different MoS2 nanoribbons morphologies were obtained by moving the crucibles inside the furnace during the CVD process. The MoS2 phase was observed through XRD analysis in both morphologies; however, in the sample containing thorns, a molybdenum oxide phase was found, which suggests incomplete sulfurization during the process. Using Raman and XPS spectroscopy studies, it was possible to determine the existence of vacancies in the nanoribbons with thorns. The incomplete sulfurization generates vacancies and causes the exposure of monolayers out of the nanoribbon morphology giving the appearance of thorns.
