PIA FICA: Experiencias y desafíos en la búsqueda de una comunidad universitaria inclusiva

Abstract
In recent years there has been an increase in diagnoses associated with neurodivergence and the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of the Universidad de La Frontera has not been an exception. For this reason, the faculty implemented their own Academic Inclusion Program in 2022. With the main objective of promoting an inclusive culture. This program is innovative because of its work with all the Faculty’s members, providing attention to students who present neurodevelopmental conditions or mental health disorders, implementing reasonable adjustments, along with the delivery of tools and support in their academic progression. At the same time, it transversally trains professors and staff in diversity and accessibility. In this work, we present the program execution experience and its evaluation according to the agents involved. For this purpose, satisfaction surveys were applied to professors from different departments of the faculty, as well as to students who benefited from the program. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of the professors’ satisfaction with the training and counseling provided was made. In addition, the impact of the program on the beneficiary students, is also exemplified, with their experiences and appreciation. Finally, the challenges and projections of the work with the educational community are presented. Results: The responses from both groups exemplify adherence to the program’s functioning. However, there are also references to the lack of action guidelines, difficulties in communication with professors, limitations in infrastructure, and concerns regarding reasonable adjustments. These obstacles and challenges will be considered for the upcoming academic year of 2024
