Abstract

Currently, professional communication is becoming more and more relevant. In view of this, the study of the terminological units that enable communication in professional practice is substantial. In this context, terminology is an instrument for the conceptualization and representation of knowledge in each field of knowledge and a fundamental element of communication, since it ensures systematicity in the transmission of expert knowledge. Therefore, the objective of this research is to describe the knowledge and use of terminology by professionals in three areas: Pedagogy, Law and Engineering. To achieve this purpose, three guided interviews were conducted and a deductive interpretation of the data with categories determined from the dimensions of terminology knowledge: linguistic, cognitive and communicative. The results indicate that, in general, the three professionals are aware of the use of terminology in their professional work and of the communicative needs that the organizational environment itself demands with respect to the handling of terms in the professional community.
