Lithium Mining in Chile and Social Conflict: A Look at the Political-Commercial, Geopolitical and Socio-Enviromental Aspects from a Intermestic Perspective
Abstract
The present work seeks to investigate the social conflict associated with mining in Chile, from three dimensions: political-commercial, geopolitical and socio- environmental. For this purpose, a methodology for document review on the topic was used, putting emphasis on the international legislation in force in our country. The theoretical focus is based on the intermestic concept, which seeks to describe phenomena with an indissoluble link between the national and the international, in addition to the concepts of "aperturismo", and "extractivism". The current state of lithium mining in the country does not allow for a greater development in terms of added value, at the same time that it favors the transgression of international obligations in matters of indigenous consultation and protection of the environment by a highly economistic approach. As a conclusion, a critical review of the promotion of "green" development policies such as electromobility is proposed, favoring a more detailed observation on the unequal impacts in socio-environmental terms in the international concert and the North/South inequalities, expressed at the local level.
