Abstract

In recent years, social networks have profoundly changed the way people relate to each other, as well as the way they see themselves and others. The aim of this study was to analyze how social networks affect the perception of body image in Physical Education undergraduate students. The methodology used was qualitative with a descriptive phenomenological approach. The sample consisted of 80 first year Physical Education Pedagogy students from a university in the center-south of Chile. The results reveal that social networks play an important role in the configuration of users' self-image and aesthetic decision-making, although the effects are not always negative or homogeneous. It is concluded that virtual self-image and social relationships reflect the participants' desire to project a positive and healthy image, although often influenced by unrealistic beauty standards that prevail on the platforms.
