Well-being criteria in office buildings from the occupants' perspective: an exploratory mixed method approach

Abstract
This study explores well-being criteria for office environments from the perspective of occupants, moving beyond merely reducing discomfort to enhancing positive well-being. The research utilized a mixed-method approach, starting with 43 qualitative interviews and followed by a quantitative survey involving 359 participants. Thematic analysis of the interviews identified key well-being factors, which were further examined through descriptive analysis and bivariate correlations in the survey data. Findings indicate that, at the workspace level, occupants prioritize indoor environmental comfort, ergonomic furniture, and space layout. On a broader office building scale, they expect a safe, functional environment that supports social interaction, physical activity, and stress relief. Surrounding building features, including proximity to public transport and safety, also emerged as key factors. These insights highlight the multi-layered nature of well-being in office settings and provide valuable criteria for designing workplaces that support both productivity and occupant well-being. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
