Abstract

Introduction: in recent decades, cardiometabolic diseases have increased their prevalence globally, particularly in developing countries such as Chile. Among the main associated risk factors are the adoption of unhealthy lifestyles characterized by a sedentary lifestyle, low levels of physical activity and excessive energy intake. Along with the reduction in the consumption of energy-dense foods, the study of unprocessed foods with a high content of naturally occurring bioactive compounds has gained importance for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In this sense, brown seaweed stands out as foods rich in fiber and minerals; with a high content of bioactive metabolites that are not found in terrestrial vegetables. Materials and methods: this article reviews the epidemiological evidence from studies evaluating the protective role of seaweed consumption against cardiometabolic diseases, as well as studies in animals and cellular models of compounds isolated from brown seaweed such as phlorotannins. Therefore, this review offers an overview of the antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antiadipogenic and antioxidant properties of brown algae, exploring the effects of their purified compounds for an understanding of their possible mechanisms of action. © 2025 Sociedad Chilena de Nutrición, Bromatología y Toxicología.
