URBAN FUTURES AND MOBILITY IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC APPROACH TO THE URBAN INFRASTRUCTURING PROCESSES OF NEOLIBERAL URBANISM
Abstract
This article analyzes the impact of universal accessibility technologies on the mobility infrastructure of Santiago de Chile through an ethnography conducted between 2020 and 2022 with the participation of older adults. It is observed that innovations in streets, micros (buses) and subways, rather than promoting inclusive urbanism, deepen the fragmentation and inequalities characteristic of neoliberal urbanism. The study reveals a paradox: the coexistence of efforts for a more accessible city with the persistence of a focused urban development model and weak urban planning mechanisms. It is concluded that, despite speeches and innovations, urban infrastructure in Santiago continues to reproduce socio-spatial exclusion, perpetuating a fragmented and precarious urban future in terms of mobility.
