Structural Feasibility and Electromagnetic Analysis of an Ironless Rotor Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine

Abstract

This paper presents an electromagnetic and structural study of an ironless-rotor axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machine with two different materials and manufacturing techniques. The machine features a disc-type non-ferromagnetic structure with a double-stator and a single rotor configuration. The rotor core is originally made of polyamide (PA) 6 and the permanent magnets (PMs) are bonded on the rotor disc. Results indicate that the use of PLA should be preferred over PA6 for use in the coreless rotor structure obeying thermal reasons, since it exhibits higher mechanical resistance in several operating points.
