Abstract

The goal of a competency-based curricula is to bring the students closer to the reality of his or her professional field. As a result, relevancy is increased and obsolescence is decreased. Thus, social responsibility is a generic competence that should be included in all curricula. The University of Valparaíso is comitted to include social responsibility within the profiles of its programs. It has developed the project “Education for Professionals with values, attitudes and behavior necessary to exercise Social Responsibility”, through which faculty members of different programs have been trained in the design of teachinglearning strategies and in the evaluation of values and principles which support this competence. Additionally, students have been taught to practice social responsibility. In the Chemistry and Pharmacy program, faculty members analyzed the status of the program and elaborated an exit profile, stablished socially responsible behaviors which the future professionals should possess and reformulated their class contents. At the same time, the students defined the actions that will allow their incorporation into society and stablished the levels of commitment to their social responsability.
