Parenting Practices and Challenges for Latin American Migrant Families in Santiago de Chile
Keywords: migration, vulnerability, parenting
Abstract
This study explores the parenting practices and challenges faced by Latin American migrant families with children under 5 years old living in Santiago, Chile. Through qualitative interviews with 17 migrant caregivers and a focus group with five mothers, the research examines how migration experiences impact parenting. Findings reveal that socio-economic vulnerabilities, cultural adjustments and limited access to support systems significantly affect parenting practices. The lack of extended family support and difficulties accessing childcare services exacerbate parental stress. The study emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive public policies and enhanced assistance services to support migrant families in their parenting roles. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
