Abstract

Hydrogen production from catalytic steam reforming of biomass compounds represents an alternative to the growing demand for new renewable energy sources. In this work, highly stable Ni catalysts synthesized by exsolution method from LaNi0.38B0.62O3±?-type perovskite with different cations at the B site (B= Ti, Al, Fe) are described. These catalysts were evaluated in hydrogen production from steam reforming reaction using ethanol, a typical oxygenated molecule derived from biomass that is commonly used for this reaction. XRD analyses confirmed the formation of perovskite-like structures and the exsolution of Ni metallic particles after reduction treatment. In addition, XPS results demonstrated surface enrichment of Ni(0). The catalysts that exhibited greater stability in 24 h tests were those reduced at 750 °C, from LaNi0.38Ti0.62O3-? and LaNi0.38Al0.62O3-? perovskites, the catalyst with Ti in B-site being the most stable with no signs of deactivation throughout the whole reaction. Moreover, this catalyst maintained a constant activity during 100 h of TOS, a very low carbon deposit formation rate, and showed a high capacity to remove carbon deposits via gasification, compared to reported catalysts not based on noble metals. The high stability observed in this catalyst was related to the strong metal-support interaction generated during the metal catalyst preparation process from the exsolution method. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
