Abstract

Salicylic acid (SA) is a central phytohormone that orchestrates genetic and physiological responses involving defense mechanisms against pathogens. This review presents cutting-edge research on emerging molecular players identified within the past 5 years contributing to SA accumulation. Furthermore, we delve into two relatively underexplored domains: the dynamic production of SA throughout the plant life cycle, with a specific focus on senescence, and the intricate interplay between SA, nutrition, and its multifaceted implications on plant development and defense response. This synthesis aims to provide a contemporary and comprehensive understanding of the diverse roles of SA in plant biology. © 2024 The Author(s).
