Abstract

Mastectomy is the treatment of choice in women with breast cancer or prophylactically in genetic mutations, but it can have a negative impact on women’s quality of life in the short and long term.The objective was to perform a critical analysis of the literature regarding the impact of mastectomy on women’s quality of life.A systematic review of the literature on the effect of mastectomy on the quality of life of oncologic patients was carried out. The search strategy was performed by investigating primary studies, selecting studies published in the last three years. Ten articles were incorporated in the final analysis. Relevant information was obtained on the effects of mastectomy on the quality of life of women, protective factors to improve personal satisfaction after surgery, new treatment options and plans to improve the quality of life that currently exist. The need to implement a framework to safeguard the quality of life of mastectomized women is justified.The evidence indicates that it is feasible to implement a support program with a multidisciplinary approach, adapted to the reality of the country’s health care system. © 2024 Sociedad Chilena de Obstetricia y Ginecología.
