Abstract

Squatter settlements have consolidated historically as a way to access housing in Chile. The recent pandemic scenario, in addition to political changes and new migration flows, stresses the idea that squatter settlements still play a prominent role in supplying housing for more vulnerable groups, and that they must be discussed considering such circumstances. Through the case study of Altos de Placilla Nuevo squatter settlement in the region of Valparaíso, this paper proposes studying the strategies used by the neighbors to establish themselves in 2019. The conclusions are that while some former strategies are replicated –for example collaboration and solidarity among neighbor – new approaches emerge that position squatter homes as final housing solutions, reinforced by the sociopolitical and health context. © (2025), (Universidad Austral de Chile).
