Neobarrocho Approaches from Abya Yala, drawing on Rivera Cusicanqui's Thought
Abstract
Neobarrocho approaches are rooted in the territory of Abya Yala, which is the Kuna denomination for the American continent, employed to actively re-create this region from an anti-colonial perspective. This chapter introduces neobarrocho, which echoes different ontological, aesthetic, and epistemological tenets of the global south that seek to restitute the semiotic density and heterogeneity of knowledge that has been reduced to binaries by dominant eurocentric perspectives. In summary, neobarrocho approaches favor strategies that are multidisciplinary and privilege critical analysis of subjects in their territories, knowledge construction through dialogue, embodied experiences, and analyzing everyday interactions, spaces, and culture. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Penny A.
