Removal of pesticides from wastewater by Fenton systems: Enhanced degradation by chelating agents and solar irradiation
Keywords: Advanced oxidation; Chelating agents; Fenton systems; Pesticides; Solar irradiation
Abstract
Among different advanced oxidation processes, the Fenton system is efficient for removing most nonbiodegradable and toxic emergent contaminants, especially pesticides. Additionally, the Fenton reaction was the basis for other advanced technologies, so it has attracted significant attention. This book chapter discusses this process in detail, including the mechanism, operation parameters, current trends with a special focus on chelating agents and solar radiation. The applications of Fenton systems in pesticide removal from wastewater are highlighted in different sections in this chapter. In the end, recent challenges and future work in this research area are suggested, and the application of these systems as pretreatment, post-treatment, and hybrid systems should be strengthened in order to scale up the process at full scale.
