Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of independent tooth tips, interior and exterior, in U-shape core modular stator permanent magnet synchronous machines (MPMSM). Radial flux machines are considered with inner and outer rotor, 12 slots, 10 and 14-poles, tooth-coil windings, and surface mounted magnets. Each of the four machine variants analyzed have different stator and rotor dimensions, each one optimized to have a high torque density. A sensitivity analysis of the tooth tip's dimensions is made, and a subsequent optimization problem is applied on each machine variant, utilizing the particle swarm algorithm (PSO), maximizing average torque and minimizing ripple torque with the dimensions of the tooth tips as the workspace. The resulting optimized dimensions are illustrated and compared, showing that adding tooth tips can reduce the ripple torque in some cases and they are not necessarily symmetric.
