Synthetic rubber: A brief guide to its variants and applications

Abstract
A brief review of the synthesis of elastomers, fundamental aspects to understand the synthetic routes to obtain them, is presented here. In addition, the role of sustainable monomers in the development of new ways to obtain these polymeric materials is presented. Very interesting rubbers derived from vinyl monomers, such as butadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, butyl rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, among others, their synthesis, conventional applications, and applications of recent novelties are reviewed in detail. Specialty rubbers, such as FKM-type fluoroelastomers and fluorosilicones, which have distinguished themselves in cutting-edge applications such as aerospace, are also discussed in detail. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
