Abstract

Introduction. Scientific evidence presents a vast amount of information related to complex, heterogeneous, and diverse strategies from their sources of development to combat the global tobacco epidemic and reduce tobacco-related diseases and deaths. Objective. To identify the strategies related to tobacco control in Latin American and Caribbean countries based on scientific evidence. Method. A scoping review was conducted, selecting scientific articles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with full-text availability, free access, and published in the last 10 years (2013–2023). The bibliographic search was carried out in the Portal of the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information and in the databases of the Scientific Electronic Library Online, Web of Science, Scopus, and the World Health Organization’s digital library. Results. Fourteen articles were analyzed, highlighting strategies such as the 5A approach, brief counseling, quitline services and text messaging, pharmacological interventions, motivational interviewing, and the ABC-D and 5R strategies. Several studies focused on public policies with strategies related to tobacco product labeling and packaging regulations, communication campaigns, smoke-free environments, tax increases, tobacco control and treatment programs, and intersectoral collaboration. Conclusions. This study reveals the importance of using combined strategies both at the individual level for treating people and through governmental initiatives or programs for tobacco control. © 2024 Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
