Abstract

In Chile, the frequency types of injuries and the factors involved of those who practice high-intensity functional training are unknown, and it is necessary to generate this knowledge to develop prevention strategies. Objective: to analyze the prevalence of injuries in adults who practice high-intensity functional training, to know their characteristics and evaluate if there are differences in the prevalence of injuries. Methods: analytical cross-sectional study where 205 people were evaluated from 18- to 60-year-old Crossfit® practicers in 17 certified gyms in Santiago, Metropolitan Region, Chile. Demographic, nutritional, sports history, level of physical activity, habits, prevalence and characteristics of musculoskeletal injuries were investigated by electronic survey. The results were expressed in the measures of central tendency and frequency. The Shapiro Wilk test was used to establish normality and the Wilcoxon test to determine statistically significant differences between the presence or absence of injuries. The software used was STATA v14. Results: The prevalence of injuries was 44.8%. Pain was reported by 53.8% of the sample and the most frequency types of injury were muscle strains (12.9%) and sprains (11.8%); shoulders (31.7%), spinal cord (17. 2%) and knees (12.9%), were the most affected areas. Only the exercises time showed significant differences in the presence or absence of injury (p=<0,001). Conclusion: This study made it possible to objectify the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in those who perform high-intensity functional training in certified Crossfit® gyms, and shoulder being the most affected anatomical region.
