Abstract

The requirements of international accreditors in Engineering careers such as ABET in addition to mastery technical knowledge emphasize the importance of “soft” skills. In the software industry, the development of these skills becomes much more necessary because of the nature of the software development process is intensive in communication and teamwork. Evidence shows that students in the first years of computer careers are taught without explicitly considering the development of soft skills. A strategy to face this challenge is to include the use of systematic programming teaching methodologies, which not only focus on aspects of the process but also explicitly consider soft skills. This article describes how the R&G methodology considers a set of soft skills in a first programming course. The results show that it is possible to consider methodologies that, early on, address the soft skills required by computer students.
