PROMINENT PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN THE CHEDUNGUN SPOKEN IN ALTO BIO-BIO

Abstract

This study offers a characterization of some of the most prominent phonological processes attested in the Chedungun dialect of the Mapuche language, spoken in Alto Bio-Bio. The participants (44) were all native speakers from ten localities in Alto Bio-Bio, chosen on account of their proficiency in Mapuche. Data collection was conducted via recordings of lexical lists, after which neo-distributionalist phonetic and phonological analyses were completed. Results showed that this variant of Mapudungun displays high percentages of de-interdentalization, low percentages of voicing and almost no phonological processes of vocalic decentralization.
