Abstract

The aim of this article is to review the literature on transnational care studies, specifically on the adult population left behind in the country of origin when children migrate. For this purpose, a search, review and systematisation of the international literature (books and articles) and journals on migration, gender and family studies has been carried out. We propose that two analytical points of focus converge in this discussion. The first is derived from studies on transnational migrant families and the second from studies on care. Through a review of the literature, we have identified the main contributions that each of these points of focus makes to the analysis of care for the elderly in contexts of transnational migration, and we also review some of the missing data and blind spots in order to elaborate on emerging research agendas in this area.
