In this article, a methodology and a model to estimate the emission of atmospheric pollutants produced by gasoline vehicles associated to the primary road network of the Metropolitan Region (Chile). The methodology is based on the experimental characterization of traffic flow and on the experimental determination of emissions. The experimental determination of these factors is done by means of transient tests using a chassis dynamometer. The results consist on emission factors as a function of average speed for each vehicle category, the characterization of the traffic network of the Metropolitan Region, concerning both type of vehicles and driving modes, and the annual total emission associated to each category. From the analysis of the results it is concluded that the non-catalytic vehicles are responsible for the 82% of total emission of carbon monoxide of gasoline vehicles running in the Metropolitan Region, for the 58% of the nitrogen oxides emissions and almost for the 75% of the total hydrocarbon emissions.
