Abstract

Direct and reverse martensitic transformations have been studied in Mn50Ni40In10 ribbons by means of magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements. The alloy is L2(1)-type single-phase austenite, which transforms into a 14M monoclinic martensite. The martensitic transformation is accompanied by a large change in the electrical resistivity. The field dependence of characteristic transformation temperatures is reported. A field-induced reverse martensitic transformation with large hysteretic losses was observed. The reversibility of magnetization isotherms in the temperature interval where direct martensitic transformation occurs is also reported. (c) 2009 American Institute of Physics.
