Besides teaching I have directed more than 20 graduate and postgraduate thesis, mostly regarding the application of components derived from Science and Technology Studies (STS) to policy and environmental issues.
In order to transfer the academic results of the Fondecyt 1170153 project to society, the "Nuestros Suelos” sub-project was created (www.nuestrossuelos.cl), which is currently under development. Our Soils aims to design and test a qualitative participatory methodology for exploratory evaluation of degraded soils based on a citizen science model. Initiated in early 2018, Our Soils has so far produced (1) a methodology describing step by step a procedure to qualitatively assess soil degradation based on citizen science, (2) a series of low-cost, open source technologies for the evaluation of soil degradation, in particular fertility and the presence of heavy metals and (3) three tests of these methodologies with base communities in the Atacama Region. Our final objective is not only to produce academic publications analyzing the experience, but also to end with a process of international dissemination of the initiative and its instruments, so that it can be used by various communities affected by soil degradation worldwide.
