I have dedicated years to training advanced human capital in managing critically ill patients. As a guest lecturer at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), I teach in several continuous education programs, including “Diplomado en Kinesiología respiratoria pediátrica” (2019 to present), “Diplomado de Kinesiterapia para pacientes crítico adulto” (2019 to present), and “Manejo fonoaudiológico integral de la persona con traqueostomía” (2023 to present). I also lead the program “Manejo kinesiológico integral de la persona con traqueostomía” and teach respiratory muscle evaluation and evidence-based practice in the “Especialidad en kinesiología cardiorrespiratoria del adulto”, a leading national program in our field. Additionally, I participated in the “Manejo ventilatorio avanzado” course (2024) and lecture in the workshops for conceptualizing research in the “Medicina traslacional” course in the master's program in health sciences research at the PUC. I am a thesis advisor for the same program, with the topic “Monitoring Respiratory muscle behavior in Chronically ill patients during ventilatory support discontinuation: A physiological study”, applying advanced real-time muscle monitoring methods (ultrasound, muscle oxygen saturation measured with infrared technology, and surface electromyography), technical skills of importance in the field of physical rehabilitation. I also serve as an external reviewer for the “magister en terapía Física y rehabilitación” at the Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD), with the topic “valores de masa muscular basal en cuidados intensivos y su asociación con el funcionamiento físico previo”. The opportunity to discuss knowledge gaps in this area, which is particularly of interest for the present project, has been invaluable.

I have shared with different communities on various topics related to the rehabilitation of critically ill patients, being invited as a speaker for the “Conversatorio interactivo organizado por el Magister en Terapia Física y Rehabilitación (MAKI) de la UDD”, named “MAKI en Contexto: Músculos respiratorios y destete: ¿cuál es su relación con el Síndrome post cuidados intensivos?”. On a similar topic, I have been invited for talks on national YouTube channel, for the kinesiology department of the PUC with the topic “Neuromuscular electrical stimulation in critical care setting: beyond local impact”, and for the first international scientific event organized by Haute école Condorcet in Belgium, which aimed to inspire students interested in the field of respiratory physiotherapy and intensive care. I have also participated in talks for nursing, highlighting the importance of post-intensive care syndrome at the “coloquio de enfermería para investigación en cuidados críticos de la PUC, 2023”. In the clinical side, recently I participated with the talk “weaning of the chronically critically ill patient” for the “Jornada de Actualización en Kinesiología del Paciente Crítico 2024” at the hospital clínico UD Christus. Also gave the talk “Práctica kinesiológica basada en evidencia: una visión compartida” for the first “Jornada de Actualización en Kinesiología Intensiva y Ventilación Mecánica” at the Hospital Clínico Eloiza Diaz. I have shared experiences on the management of critically ill patients at various congresses, both nationally and internationally, highlighting participation in congresses of the Sociedad Chilena de Medicina Intensiva (SOCHIMI, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2023, 2024), with 2024 being notable for participating in the free oral speech modality, winning first place with the topic of my doctoral thesis “Role of neuromuscular electrical stimulation to prevent respiratory muscle weakness in critically ill patients and its association to changes in myokines profile: a randomized clinical trial”. Internationally, I have attended with abstracts to the congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (2023 and 2024) and a congress of the American Thoracic Society in the United States (2022). Also, this 2025 I will discuss new insights on rehabilitation in intensive care settings at the World Physiotherapy Congress in Japan, where there is also another specialty instance, the Symposium for The Asia-Pacific Early Mobilization Network Office, a key instance for my area of interest.
Finally, but no less importantly, I would like to highlight my role as director in Chile, of the “Project for Collaboration in Clinical Research and Academic Exchange in the field of critically ill hospitalized patients (intensive care) with a focus on preventing the loss of functionality and quality of life: the role of early physical activity (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19)”. This 2022 initiative lasts for three years, and is supported by AGCID and the Valonia-Brussels Chile joint commission, and has promoted the bidirectional exchange of academics, the generation of academic products, and the signing of an agreement for the mobility of undergraduate students in the area of intensive care and a research internship in the same area for students of Kinesiology at PUC. During each academic visit (twice a year), there are a series of talks on topics of interest, which are broadcast to clinical centers interested. I am also the founder and director of the organization FREEMIND research in the kinesiology department of PUC, which is a consulting and collaborative organization supported by the Health Sciences School, it offers methodological assistance to clinicians, aiming to generate high-quality scientific evidence that impacts our community. Our goal is to contribute to the progress of health sciences research, particularly kinesiology, collaborating in the design, development, execution, and dissemination of high-quality translational research, fostering a “research culture”. So far, four out of five projects have been in the area of critically ill patients. I also actively participate in the CREARLab and LINK Laboratories, both from Kinesiology department of PUC, aimed at promoting research in different areas of this discipline. However, particularly the former in the area of critical patient care and respiratory care. In both instances, monthly talks are held, inviting various interested parties, also attracting master's and doctoral students who wish to develop projects with the team. Finally, I want to highlight my participation in the UC Journal Club (2021) and the “Ciencia Impacta” initiative (2020). Both, and particularly the latter, aim to bring research closer to the public through open talks with researchers from various fields, interviewed by non-experts.
