Conception, creation and direction of the industry diploma Geomechanics Applied to Mining Design. wich is an intensive nine-month program offered by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Chile. Comprising six specialized courses, the diploma covers key areas such as rock mechanics fundamentals, rock excavation, geomechanics for both underground and open-pit mining, numerical modeling in geomechanics, and practical case study seminars. Since its inception in 2016, the program has trained 140 students, with annual participation as follows: 11 students in 2016, 17 in 2017, 22 in 2018, 25 in 2019, 14 in 2020 (online), 24 in 2021 (online), and 27 in 2022 (online), 19 in 2023 (online) and 32 in 2024 (online). This is associated with the development plan and has generated an impact on the industry, improving professional competencies of people. The people trained in this program will lead to higher levels of performance (excellence) at the industry, offering a better approach based on what they did not have the opportunity of acquire during their former studies and this is also a good way to update their knowledge of new researches.
Have led The Geosciences Training Program 2023, wich is a comprehensive initiative designed to strengthen professional skills in geomechanics and geotechnics, addressing the current and future demands of the mining industry in CODELCO. The program encompasses 100 pedagogical hours structured into five core modules and was designed for 73 students and profesionals of the Corporation.
Have led The Specific Geotechnics Training Program, wich is a 76-hour course delivered online with a final in-person workshop in Santiago. Designed for 57 participants, it focuses on developing skills in geotechnical design, monitoring, and risk management for both open-pit and underground mining. The program emphasizes practical workshops, case studies, and collaboration to standardize best practices and strengthen geotechnical expertise in mining operations.
Have led 63 projects, in the field of include rock mechanics, underground excavation stability, hydraulic fracturing effects, dynamic testing of reinforcement systems, empirical and numerical modeling for stope stability, slope stability analysis, seismic response of rock masses, and the integration of innovative technologies like the MineRoc platform for geomechanical analysis. The projects emphasize both fundamental and applied research, with a focus on enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining operations.
The software MineRoc has been demonstrated over 100 times for open stope design, benefiting the mining industry worldwide, including countries like Chile, Peru, Canada, and Kazakhstan. Additionally, significant scientific contributions include the organization of the 9th International Symposium on Rockbursts and Seismicity in Mines (RASIM 9) held in Santiago, Chile, in November 2017. During the same period, two specialized workshops were conducted: one focused on the impact of hydraulic fracturing on rock mass behavior, and the other on deformation-based support design for static and dynamic conditions in mining, both enhancing the understanding and practical applications of geomechanical principles in the industry.
Licence contract of MineRoc of the MineRoc software, granted to various mining companies and institutions. Key recipients include Newmont (Yanacocha and Argentina), Volcan Compañía Minera, Sociedad Punta del Cobre, Nexa Resources, Lundin Mining, Yamana Gold, Alamos Gold, and Grupo Minero Las Cenizas, covering projects in countries such as Chile, Peru, and Argentina. Academic licenses were also provided to Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Universidad Andrés Bello, Universidad de Concepción, and Universidad de Atacama. These licenses have supported empirical stability studies, mining planning, and training in geomechanics, enhancing safety and efficiency in mining operations globally.
