Experience to contribute with scientific knowledge in the development of the field of national interest addressed and public policy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With a strong background in engineering, data processing, and modeling, Camila Alvarez-Garreton (CAG) specialized in Earth sciences and hydrology. Her research combines optimization and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to scientific inquiry, aimed at understanding the environment and addressing both fundamental and applied scientific questions. This approach has enabled CAG to make significant contributions to the science-policy interface, particularly regarding water security and climate change.

Among her most notable achievements, the development of the CAMELS-CL dataset stands as a cornerstone of CAG’s impact. Created during her postdoctoral work at CR2, this dataset has been pivotal in advancing large-sample hydrology applications both in Chile and globally. To enhance accessibility, CAG developed the web platform www.camels.cr2.cl, which has facilitated data exploration and downloads, supporting a wide range of scientific studies, technical applications, and educational initiatives. The platform has reached tens of thousands of users and enabled over 2,000 full dataset downloads, according to CR2 records. Furthermore, CAG has showcased the dataset’s potential in seminars for public institutions such as DGA, Universidad Austral de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Universidad de Chile, among others, emphasizing its role in water management and informed decision-making.

Advancing in her research career and leadership, CAG led the Water Security integrative theme at CR2 , an interdisciplinary initiative that consolidated in a national report for public policy (https://www.cr2.cl/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Water_Security_Report2024_.pdf) and generated science-based recommendations for climate change adaptation plans (e.g., https://www.cr2.cl/observaciones-a-los-planes-de-adaptacion-al-cambio-climatico/), contributing to the development of sustainable water management strategies in Chile.

She also actively participates in general public events such as the “III Conferencia Internacional en Educación en Cambio Climático y Desarrollo Sostenible en Latinoamérica,” the “Congreso del Futuro - Los Ríos,” and the “Cumbre Social por la Acción Climática”, fostering dialogue on climate adaptation and sustainable water resource management. Her contributions to national interest issues are also reflected through outreach publications and policy briefs, where she has addressed topics such as the differences between drought and water scarcity (https://www.cr2.cl/capsula-climatica-que-ocurre-en-chile-sequia-o-escasez-hidrica/), the critical situation of drinking water in the Metropolitan Region (https://www.cr2.cl/analisis-cr2-la-critica-situacion-del-agua-potable-en-la-region-metropolitana/), the impacts of forest plantations on water provision (https://www.cr2.cl/policy-brief-cr2-el-impacto-del-bosque-nativo-y-las-plantaciones-forestales-en-el-suministro-de-agua-en-chile/), limitations regarding water allocation in Chile (https://www.cr2.cl/policy-brief-cr2-derechos-de-agua-en-chile-una-mirada-discordante-con-los-procesos-naturales/), and the water crisis in the Petorca river basin (https://www.cr2.cl/policy-brief-cr2-crisis-hidrica-en-la-cuenca-de-petorca-una-combinacion-entre-la-megasequia-y-el-manejo-del-agua/), among others (see list below), providing essential insights for climate governance and policy-making. Through press interviews and articles, CAG has raised public awareness about water security challenges, including access to water in rural communities (https://www.ciperchile.cl/2022/03/22/dia-mundial-del-agua-nada-para-celebrar/) and the visualization of Chile’s water crisis (https://agua.visdatos.cl/clinic).

Her work exemplifies a commitment to bridging the gap between scientific research and practical applications, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing resilience in the face of global environmental challenges.
