A lo largo de su trayectoria, Gabriel Gatica ha demostrado un compromiso sostenido con la creación de capacidades humanas y tecnológicas que fortalezcan el desarrollo regional y nacional. Lideró la postulación y adjudicación del Centro de Supercómputo en Inteligencia Artificial Aplicada para la Región de Valparaíso, una iniciativa de 12 millones de dólares orientada a formar talento avanzado, impulsar la investigación interdisciplinaria y conectar la academia con los desafíos reales de la sociedad. Desde su rol como profesor adjunto en la Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, ha diseñado e impartido cursos de Machine Learning, Deep Learning y Visión Computacional, contribuyendo a la formación de profesionales que hoy lideran procesos de transformación digital. Además, su trabajo como mentor, evaluador y líder de equipos de I+D en Artificyan ha permitido transferir experiencia práctica a nuevas generaciones de científicos, ingenieros y emprendedores, fomentando una cultura de innovación con propósito y arraigo territorial.
Su enfoque de trabajo se caracteriza por conectar la investigación con el impacto social y productivo. Ha difundido conocimiento a través de publicaciones científicas indexadas (IEEE, Procedia), la participación en comités académicos internacionales y la autoría de un libro de divulgación tecnológica, promoviendo la comprensión pública de la inteligencia artificial y la innovación sostenible. En colaboración con el INIA Quilamapu, ha desarrollado proyectos que trasladan la ciencia a la práctica —como sistemas de visión computacional para el monitoreo de cultivos, modelos hiperespectrales para predicción de cosechas y herramientas de teledetección para gestión hídrica— fortaleciendo la productividad y sostenibilidad del sector agrícola. Su labor en la protección de propiedad intelectual (patente WO2016082055A1) y en la creación de alianzas entre empresas, universidades y organismos públicos evidencia una visión clara: que la tecnología y la inteligencia artificial deben servir como motores de equidad, resiliencia y bienestar social.
