Formación de Capital Humano

Dr Carlos Celis completed his BSc in Sports Sciences in 2006 from the University of Concepcion (Chile). He obtained his PhD in 2011 from the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Science, University of Glasgow (UK). After obtaining his PhD, Dr Celis was awarded a Postdoctoral Research position at the Human Nutrition Research Centre at Newcastle University (UK). He joined the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow in 2015 where he is currently a Research Fellow at the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre.

Dr Celis contributes to several national and international studies that aim to understand the role of lifestyles (physical activity, sedentary behaviours and diet) on the aetiology of non-communicable diseases including cancer, dementia, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. He is currently part of the UK Biobank Research Team led by Professors Jill Pell, Professor Naveed Sattar and Professor Jason Gill. Dr Celis’s role in the UK Biobank is to conduct prospective population cohort studies involving 502,000 participants, designed to determine the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that predispose individuals to chronic diseases. (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/)

Dr Celis also works as an Honorary Research Associate at the Human Nutrition Research Centre at Newcastle University. He is part of the Pan-European research study on personalised nutrition called "Food4Me - Personalised Nutrition: An integrated analysis of opportunities and challenges " which is funded by the European FP7. Food4Me delivered an Internet-based Randomized Controlled Trial on personalised nutrition in ~1600 adults from 7 European countries. (http://www.food4me.org/).

In addition to this, Dr Celis is a co-investigator in the European funded study called EuroDHYAN (Innovative Prevention Strategies for type 2 Diabetes in South Asians Living in Europe). This study aims to: a) to build on the findings of recent diabetes prevention trials in South Asian populations (e.g.;PODOSA, DHIAAN, HELIUS) and to accelerate knowledge production and the process of implementation of research findings; b) To develop targeted recommendations on how to support South Asian populations in the uptake and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviours, to prevent diabetes and which specific elements to focus on. (http://www.eurodhyan.eu/)

Dr Celis is currently the Director of the ELHOC Research Consortium (ELHOC - Epidemiology of Lifestyle and Health Outcomes in Chile), which includes over 25 researchers from 12 Research institutions in Chile. ELHOC is aiming to generate scientific evidence on lifestyle and its association with health outcomes, that could inform public health policies and future intervention for the prevention of non-communicable diseases.
