We have taken a multifaceted approach to the study of ALS disease mechanisms. We use mouse models of ALS to study the interactions between motor neurons (the cells of the nervous system that control movement) and glia, (the cells that support and surround neurons in the spinal cord). With the advent of the new stem cell technologies, we have also initiated studies aimed at exploring the interactions between neurons and glia in human ALS.
