    El Congreso de Mastología es un congreso nacional bienal que reúne a todos quienes ven pacientes con cáncer de mama del país: cirujanos, oncólogos, ginecólogos, radio-oncólogos, cirujanos plásticos, kinesiólogos y enfermeros. En el evento se presentan nuevos avances en tratamientos y manejos generales, además de exponerse los distintos trabajos de investigación seleccionados de un pool de varios trabajos enviados. Este año se realizó en Chile el XIX congreso de la Federación Latinoamericana de Mastología por lo que se convirtió en un congreso internacional con cerca de 600 invitados y más de 60 conferencistas, lo que potenció temáticas relacionadas a la vanguardia en nuevas terapias, dando un barniz respecto a las nuevas recomendaciones y lo que viene a futuro. La Universidad Católica envió 16 estudios originales, de los cuales ocho fueron aceptados para presentar en formato oral y de ellos cuatro fueron presentados por el Dr. Francisco Acevedo, quien además dio una charla magistral sobre toxicidades a largo plazo en el sobreviviente de cáncer de mama. El trabajo «Respuesta patológica completa y sobrevida de cáncer de mama en un hospital público» liderado por el Dr. Acevedo fue el ganador del Premio Pfizer SABCS 2019: “Este estudio muestra que aquellas pacientes con cáncer de mama que reciben quimioterapia antes de la cirugía y logran que desaparezca todo el tumor al momento de la cirugía, presentan mejor sobrevida global, especialmente en subgrupos más agresivos de cáncer de mama”. “Si bien estos datos han sido ya demostrados en países desarrollados, para nosotros tiene particular relevancia por qué refleja la importancia de recolectar datos en una base de datos en forma sistemática, y porque muestra que se puede optar a un estándar óptimo de manejo incluso en pacientes que son tratadas en el sistema público”, agregó el Dr. Acevedo. Por su parte al Dr. Benjamin Walbaum presentó dos trabajos, un poster y una presentación oral, que desarrolló como parte de un equipo de investigación en mama UC liderado por los oncólogos César Sánchez y Francisco Acevedo, y por los cirujanos oncólogos Francisco Domínguez y Mauricio Camus. “El primero de estos dos trabajos tuvo la suerte de ser premiado como el mejor póster y muestra nuestra experiencia en pacientes con cáncer de mama triple negativos (subtipo agresivo de cáncer de mama) y cómo podemos optimizar su respuesta a la quimioterapia agregando una droga que se llama Carboplatino. La idea fue comparar dos cohortes una que recibió la droga y otra que no”, explicó el Dr. Walbaum. El estudio llamado «Uso de platinos en neoadyuvancia alcanza un 50% de respuestas patológicas completas en cáncer de mama triple negativo. Experiencia de un centro», corresponde a un trabajo retrospectivo donde se tomó en cuenta a pacientes con Cáncer de Mama triple negativos, es decir que no expresan receptores hormonales ni amplificación de HER2 (otro biomarcador target), por lo que son considerados de peor pronóstico. “De esta población estudiamos dos cohortes: una que recibió tratamiento con quimioterapia estándar, y otra población que recibió la misma quimioterapia estándar más otra droga que se llama carboplatino. Esto bajo la premisa que los cáncer de mama triple negativos tienen algunas características moleculares que lo harían más sensible a esta droga”, explicó el Dr. Walbaum. El equipo encargado del estudio, pudo observar que los pacientes que recibieron la terapia combinada (estándar + carboplatino) tuvieron mejor respuesta que aquellos que solo recibieron la estándar
