Difusión y Transferencia

Coordinator of the Copernicus Relay (Reference Center) and National Repository of Earth Observation Satellite Data (Copernicus Hub, http://www.datoscopernicus.cl) of the Copernicus Program (from 2018 onwards). The Copernicus Program of the European Union is an initiative that, through a set of 14 own satellites and contributions from another 16, constitutes a Global Earth Observation System, which allows obtaining constant, timely and high-quality information for, among others, the management of the environment, the mitigation of natural disasters, the management of the territory, the monitoring of the oceans and their resources, the observation of meteorological phenomena, etc. We seek to implement a national repository for the data that covers the Chilean territory for one year on a rotating basis, that is, the repository will cover from the current date to one year ago, which represents 72 TBytes of annual information, giving online access at no cost. for any user, public or private, to this valuable wealth of information. The activities of the reference center are to coordinate different institutions interested in earth observation and coordinate a biweekly seminar, face-to-face and via streaming (webinar), on earth observation topics (www.copernicus-chile.cl).

Outreach and Difussion Activities

In disciplinary matters, I have been the organizer of a series of international workshops and seminars in EDP, Control and Inverse Problems, both in Chile and abroad.
Among the main outreach activities, has been the departmental coordination of outreach activities such as the FCFM Science and Technology Festival during the 2014, 2016 and 2017 versions, in which I have organized the participation of the DIM in the activities of the fair and in coordination with the CMM, I have participated actively in the stands and disseminating the work of the department and the center.

In these fairs I have also participated not only in the coordination, but also in the round tables and other activities related to the dissemination of the departmental work to the community in general. An example of this was the round table in which, together with graduates, academics and students of the career, the scope of the career and what are their job prospects were presented.

I have also participated in radio programs on Radio Onda Vasca in Bilbao, Spain, discussing the Chilean reality and research in Chile in February 2011, (http://www.ivoox.com/audio_rf_2817524_1.html).

As part of extension and outreach, I have participated in the Mathematics Schools of Latin America and the Caribbean (EMALCA) organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Mathematical Union (UMALCA), teaching courses in 2013 at the Pedro Ruiz National University Gallo from the city of Lambayeque (Peru) and in 2014 at the National University of San Antonio Abad in the city of Cusco (Peru). The main objective of these schools is to contribute to the development of Mathematics throughout the continent, putting the most prestigious mathematicians and researchers in the continent in contact with undergraduate and graduate students from the region from different universities, being both for students and academics, an opportunity to seek postgraduate training and open new possibilities to continue their scientific careers (see http://www.umalca.org/events/emalca).

Scientific work has also been translated into publicizing applied research topics, among them it is worth highlighting the participation in a series of communication media exposing about the use of mathematics in determining suicide risk indicators, along with to researchers in the health area, this was done on Radio Duna in the program Aire Fresco and on Radio Zero in the program País Generoso (Dec. 2016). This issue was also addressed by the written press in the magazine Que Pasa (http://www.quepasa.cl/articulo/ciencia/2016/12/anticipar-al-enemigo.shtml/) and in other written media such as El Mostrador (http://www.elmostrador.cl/cultura/2016/12/06/matematicos-chilenos-se-meten-en-la-cabeza-de-las-personas-y-elaboran-modelo-predictor-de-suicidios /), La Segunda (http://impresa.lasegunda.com/2017/10/20/A/S938NU8C), EMOL (http://www.emol.com/noticias/Nacional/2016/12/05/834146 /Psychiatrists-y-matematicos-chilenos-crean-indicador-que-pronostica-el-risgo-de-suicidio.html) among others.

The extension and dissemination has also included other issues related to the Chilean reality such as the seismic nature of our country through articles of dissemination in international media such as the newspaper EL PAIS of Spain (https://elpais.com/elpais/ 2017/05/19 / science / 1495192722_095445.html) where the article “Why can't we anticipate earthquakes yet?” was published, article written in conjunction with Professor Rafael Orive from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of Madrid (ICMAT) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), Spain.

An important extension activity of our department was the graduate schools aimed at Latin American students. These schools were aimed at students in the last bachelor and master courses of Latin American universities. Its objective was to create a space for discussion and learning of the different disciplines of mathematics related to our work. Simultaneously, the school intends to promote the Doctoral Program in Mathematical Modeling taught in our department. I was a member of the organizing committee of the XII Spring School (January 2013), XIII Spring School (October 2013), XIV Graduate School DIM-CMM (January 2015) and teaching the Introduction to Image Processing course in the XIV version from graduate school.

Finally, at present, together with Professor Florencio Utreras, and with the sponsorship of the Center for Mathematical Modeling, we are coordinating the creation of a Reference Center (Copernicus Relay) and a Repository (Copernicus HUB) of the Copernicus satellite network of European Space Agency (ESA) (http://copernicus.eu/main/overview). The Copernicus program is the cornerstone of the European Union's ongoing effort to monitor the environment and its many ecosystems, while ensuring that its citizens are prepared and protected in the face of crises, natural disasters and man-made disasters. Will Copernicus contribute an unprecedented volume of data for free, will you offer new operational services, and will drive novel business opportunities; and job creation. In this sense, the University of Chile and in particular the CMM will install a Relay, that is, a repository of satellite images that will be open and free of charge for the public and private world. In particular, it will coordinate joint actions with public institutions such as ONEMI, MOP, National Asset Ministry and other research centers and institutions in the private world (http://copernicus.eu/sites/default/files/documents/News/Network_of_Copernicus_Relays-List_of_Members_80_19Feb2018 .pdf). Together with Prof. Utreras we coordinate a series of fortnightly seminars on the use of satellite images in a wide spectrum of applications, these seminars are also transmitted by video streaming and are followed by a large number of users from the private world and also by users from various institutions public (http://copernicus-chile.cl/eventos/).

Finally, it is worth mentioning the launch of the "Repository of satellite images of the Copernicus Program- Copernicus HUB", www.datoscopernicus.cl, in operation since September 27, 2019, a repository that will make available to the entire community, free images of all the satellites of the Copernicus Program of the Union European, in which it already has about 1,000 registered. This launch for the entire community has been accompanied by extensive journalistic coverage, highlighting the interview on Megavisión Plus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ2C73Hnl28&list=PLNJ7mzVqQ8UuqxlCxUisCCK4uhhhAKSel&index=4) among others.

Actually, I am the Scientific Director of the Copernicus Regional Center for Latin America and Caribbean, Center financed by DG INTPA of European Commission
