Over the course of my academic career at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, I have supervised or co-supervised 15 master's theses and 9 completed doctoral dissertations, with 3 additional doctoral students currently in progress**. I have also mentored 3 postdoctoral researchers. Graduate students have gone on to positions in academia, government agencies (CONAF, INIA, SEA, DGA), international organizations (FAO, PNUD), and environmental consulting firms in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Germany.
At the doctoral level, my students have addressed topics spanning soil health in agroecosystems, landscape ecology and agricultural intensification, carbon dynamics in Mediterranean forests and vineyards, urban soils and technosols, and post-fire restoration in Patagonian ecosystems. Several have published in high-impact journals as first authors and have presented at international conferences.
I currently serve as Director of Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Agronomy and Natural Systems (FASN, PUC), where I oversee the Master's in Natural Resources and the Doctorate in Agricultural and Natural Sciences. In this role I coordinate admissions, thesis committees, and academic progression for over 40 active graduate students across both programs.
Beyond formal supervision, I have hosted international visiting researchers and students through Marie Sk?odowska-Curie RISE, Erasmus+, and bilateral agreements with the University of Cambridge, Institut Agro Angers, and Colorado State University, contributing to the formation of an international network of early-career researchers working on soil science and agroecology.
My dissemination and transfer work spans three complementary channels. In terms of scientific communication, I have presented at over 40 national and international conferences, including invited keynote lectures at Washington State University, the Cool Farm Alliance Annual Meeting, the Mined Land Rehabilitation Conference (Australia), and multiple Ibero-American congresses on ecological restoration and soil science. I serve as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Spanish Journal of Soil Science and previously as Associate Editor of New Forests (2011–2021), and I regularly review manuscripts for journals including Agriculture Ecosystems and Environment, Restoration Ecology, Geoderma, and Applied Soil Ecology.
In terms of knowledge transfer to the productive sector, I have led commissioned research projects with Viña Concha y Toro, Viña San Pedro, Viña Emiliana, Syngenta, Aguas Andinas, and Subsole, focused on soil health assessment, organic carbon stocks, and biodiversity baselines in vineyards and fruit orchards. I have also contributed to public policy through the National Ecological Restoration Plan Advisory Committee (Ministry of Agriculture), the Scientific-Technical Committee for the Framework Soil Law, and the Extended Operating Committee for Chile's Primary Standard for Contaminated Soils (Ministry of Environment).
For broader public audiences, I have produced a series of audiovisual capsules on sustainable agricultural practices, 15 technical fact sheets on native species for restoration, and free community courses on wetland restoration and sustainability in the San Antonio region. A technical report on soil management incentive instruments was published by ODEPA in 2025. I also serve on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cool Farm Tool Alliance, a global multi-stakeholder initiative that develops science-based tools for measuring biodiversity and carbon on farms.
