Dr. Vargas has been involved in a number of outreach activities:

1. Organization of Symposia in National and International Conferences.
2. More than 50 conferences for government entities, education and decision makers in the last five years.
3. Organizer of summer schools, including the 1st Latin American Ocean Acidification Workshop in Concepción, Chile, LAOCA2014, the second
LAOCA2016, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, and various international courses in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica.
4. Regular appearance in the written press, radio, and television in Chile.

Dr. Vargas has established a huge number of international cooperation initiatives and networks, including:
1. Support in the formation of the first Ocean Acidification Network in Africa (OA-Africa).
2. Founder and co-director of the Latin American Ocean Acidification Network (LAOCA).
3. Member of the Executive Committee of the Global Ocean Acidification Observation Network (GOA-ON).
4. Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Coordination Program for Carbon in the Ocean (IOCCP).

Este programa tiene como principales objetivos estimular la discusión científica interdisciplinaria, la creación de vínculos y el desarrollo de iniciativas conjuntas por parte de las nuevas generaciones de científicos chilenos. y promover el contacto de este grupo de jóvenes científicos chilenos con científicos que participan en programas similares en otros países (Academia Internacional de Científicos Jóvenes, TWAS, NAS u otras). Junto a esto, se espera que en un futuro cercano el grupo seleccionado se integre y colabore en las actividades de la Academia.

    La investigación, que fue realizada por el Panel Intergubernamental para el Cambio Climático (IPCC, por sus siglas en inglés), contó con 103 investigadores de 36 países, entre ellos el científico penquista, Cristian Vargas, biólogo marino y profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Ambientales de la Universidad de Concepción. Vargas, que fue escogido por el IPCC debido a su experiencia de más de 20 años estudiando la acidificación del océano, y sus implicancias en el ciclo del carbono y diferentes grupos de organismos marinos en la zona austral de nuestro país.

    ORGANIZACION DE LAS NACIONES UNIDAS

    Este reconocimiento consistió en la inclusión en un grupo de expertos de la ONU, para la realización de talleres en pos de dar cuenta de la recopilación de información y datos a nivel regional para la preparación de la segunda evaluación mundial de los océanos y contó con la participación de 50 delegados de 27 países para elaborar este reporte, el que incluye aspectos socioeconómicos.
